In July 2025, Digital Realty, a global leader in data center solutions, partnered with PPC, Southeast Europe’s largest electric utility, to launch an innovative pilot in Athens, Greece. This pilot project introduces a new era of precision in renewable energy sourcing by implementing 24/7 hourly matching of electricity consumption with renewable generation, tracked and verified through granular Guarantees of Origin (GOs).

Leveraging PPC’s renewable assets and cutting-edge digital tracking tools provided by Granular Energy, the program enables Digital Realty’s three major Athens data centers to align their energy use with real-time renewable generation. This empowers transparent, accurate reporting of clean energy consumption and associated carbon emissions—setting a new benchmark for sustainability reporting in the region.

The Athens pilot is not only transforming energy sourcing for the data center industry, but it also provides a robust blueprint for other corporates to follow. By matching renewable production and consumption on an hourly basis, the project is creating stronger market signals for clean energy investments and supporting the transition to a resilient, decarbonized power grid.

This project demonstrates how granular GOs can drive the next phase of the global energy transition—enabling credible, data-driven pathways toward net-zero targets and delivering unprecedented visibility into the origin and timing of renewable electricity use.
