In July 2025, TotalEnergies Gas & Power, in partnership with Schroders Greencoat and the software provider Granular Energy, launched a pioneering pilot project to advance transparency in renewable energy consumption in the United Kingdom. The initiative focused on the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm in Scotland, a flagship renewable energy asset.
Traditionally, the UK’s Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) system provides certificates for every megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity, but only identifies the month of generation. This lack of temporal granularity has long limited the ability of consumers and corporates to truly align their electricity usage with the physical supply of renewable energy.
To address this gap, the pilot introduced the Shaped Energy Attribute Certificate (Shaped EAC)—an innovative certificate enabling half-hourly matching between renewable generation and consumption. Leveraging Granular Energy’s advanced data platform, the project matched real-time generation data from Seagreen with end-user consumption, delivering an unprecedented level of transparency and traceability.
This pilot not only demonstrates the technical feasibility of hourly and sub-hourly granular certificates, but also lays the groundwork for a new global standard in renewable energy reporting. By aligning consumption with actual renewable supply, Shaped EACs empower businesses and consumers to move closer to the vision of 24/7 carbon-free energy—a crucial step for credible net-zero strategies.
The TotalEnergies Shaped EAC Pilot stands as a testament to innovation and collaboration in the energy sector, setting a new benchmark for market transparency, consumer trust, and climate action.
