European Energy Certificate Market Sees Strong Growth as AIB Prepares Data System Upgrade

The Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) has released its latest activity statistics, covering data up to December 2024. These monthly statistics, sourced from AIB members, provide insights into the issuance, transfer, expiration, and cancellation of Energy Certificates (EECS) across various energy sources. Notably, in 2024, approximately 1,084 TWh of certificates were issued based on production dates, with 1,067 TWh transferred and 884 TWh cancelled, underscoring the robust activity within the electricity Guarantees of Origin (GO) market. In a significant development, the AIB is transitioning to the MS Databricks tool for processing and publishing these statistics. This new system is slated to go live in May 2025 and aims to enhance data presentation by embedding interactive graphs and tables directly into the AIB website. The organization is committed to maintaining the current level of detail and scope in its published data during this transition. These statistics are crucial for stakeholders in the energy sector, offering transparency and facilitating informed decision-making regarding energy certification and trading across Europe.
